When I was writing this morning (24 minutes a day in 2024), I felt a heaviness that I couldn’t quite put my finger on.
So instead of writing about what I had planned, I started writing about that heaviness. I discovered that what I was feeling was discouragement.
It wasn’t just discouragement over one thing, but I identified four areas in my life where I am currently feeling discouraged.
To put my money where my mouth is, since I’m a thought coach that teaches people how to feel their feelings, I immediately put my pen down and found where the feeling of discouragement shows up in my body.
It was a heaviness across my entire chest and my arms felt heavy. As I sat there feeling it, the heaviness lightened.
It didn’t fully go away, but I’ve identified it and found it in my body, so now it can go when it wants to.
That also means I’m ready to experiment with some new thoughts to create new feelings (and not just stuffing the emotion down where it will pop back up whenever it wants to).
We can do this process with all of our tough feelings.
My new thoughts are about the discomfort of growth and learning - of course it’s going to feel like this. AND, I want to learn and grow so I’m willing to feel this.
I also know I won’t quit in any of the 4 areas I’m feeling discouraged in, so I know for sure things will turn out just fine.
What do you do when you feel discouraged?
I highly recommend feeling it, then becoming aware of the thoughts creating it. Once you’ve done that, start experimenting with more productive thoughts that help you to keep going.
You only fail if you stop trying.
So keep trying and see what happens.
